The Classic Carriers bicycle accessory.

Designed to fit the rear-deck-mounted Classic Carriers luggage racks, these European-made aluminum assemblies let you carry up to two bicycles securely (maximum two assemblies per carrier suggested).

Classic Carriers part #050221: Ambler Bike Attachment, includes locks, for $198.

Each bicycle carrier comes with metal and plastic hardware, allowing you to securely position them wherever you want your bicycle(s) located: to accomodate other gear or just to keep a clear line of sight to the road behind you. As one would expect, also included are a wheel-strap for securing the back tire, a quick-release for the front fork, and a separate fork for carrying the front wheel. See below for a graphical assembly guide.

NOTE: This accessory does not fit our Solstice luggage carrier because of different tubing diameter.

Piece together the assemblies that lock the attachment to the carrier, and that hold the bike tray.

Left to right in the upper boxes, moves 1-8.

  • 1-3: lift the oblong plastic clamp to free the retaining bolt, allowing the half-circle clip that circles the upper or lower crossbars of the carrier to swing freely. The head of the bolt is freed from the claw-feet when the clamp tension is removed.

  • 4: wrap the circle-clip around the carriers' crossbar;

  • 5-7: slide the head-end of the bolt into the claw-feet, and this will close the circle around the crossbar;

  • 8: close the oblong plastic ring to secure the wrap-assembly to the crossbar in the location you want, making sure the base of the bolt head is flush -- see the last panel with the OK!

  • Repeat these steps (1-8) for the companion crossbar mounting hardware. Wait before locking the lock mechanism, by inserting the key and turning 45 degrees to the open position. There are two pairs of tray-to-carrier hardware.

    Bike tray assembly

  • Slide the hardware that secures the bicycle attachment to the carrier, assembled in steps 1-8 above, on the attachment by sliding the rectangular plates into the groove that runs the full length of the underside of the tray. For the moment the hardware should move freely; you will be securing the hardware in position shortly, with a nut and washer into the screw-hole in the rectangular plate. Slide in the upper and lower elevation hardware.

  • Locate the front-fork quick-release mechanism in the package, and using a rectangular plate, washer and bolt, slide the mechanism into the groove on the underside of the tray. This mechanism should be at the upper (higher elevation) end of the tray, nearest the seats.

  • Locate the strap mechanism for securing the rear wheel. As before, use one rectangular plate, one washer and bolt to slide the mechanism into the groove on the underside of the tray.

  • Slide a plastic endcap onto each end of the tray, after the above four items are fitted in the groove.

    Prepare the attachment tray to hold the bicycle.

  • Open the quick release a few turns, and free the wheel strap from the racheting wheel-strap lock after positioning the wheel tray where the wheel will rest. Of course you've removed the front wheel from the fork.

    Secure the bicycle

  • Put the wheel in the rear wheel tray and put the fork in the quick-release at the top of the tray. Close the quick release and secure the front fork, then ratchet the wheel strap around the rear tire.

    Front tire fork-assembly

  • The mount that attaches the wheel-fork assembly to the carrier is the same as you did for the tray, steps 1-8 above. The parts identified at #17 in the diagram immediately above is a pivot, and after the mounting assembly is bolted to the carrier, pivot the two-armed front-wheel holder so the arms point skyward. The axle of the tire drops into the slots in the arms, and the quick-release of the wheel is tightened to secure the wheel to the wheel-holder.
